How has Ishmael Changed?

I think Ishmael changed because while in war killing was necessary and it soon became second natural to him in order to survive. Though after he was away from the war he could see how much devastation and depression it really could cause. He changed to me because it didn't want young boys in his home land to face the same terrible misguidance he faced. He didn't want them to see the same pain.
